In math we are working on converting decimals to fractions.
We took a test yesterday about it. We had 3 questions about parts of a whole
and we had to take the shaded part of a shape and tell what fraction of the
shape was shade. Then we had to write a decimal to match the fractions, the day
before we did some ACE questions for decimals and fractions. One of them was
splitting different amounts of food into packages (it was hard!). Today we
did a question and it was about peanut butter where as you had to choose which amount would be the better buy for a smart shopper, it turned out to be 24 oz. vs. 36 oz. Most of us chose 24 oz. because it was only $4, where as the 36 oz. jar was $8. We also chose 24 oz. because you could get the same amount of peanut butter from both jars (LCM of 24 and 36/ LCM of 4 and 8) for less. One person said, "Well, the 36 oz. jar would be the better buy because it is larger and would last longer than the 24 oz. jar." The deltas that were mentioned about the 36 oz. jar actually convinced the people that thought 24 oz. was the better buy, said that they were convinced even more. I liked this activity because in my opinion it was fun and easy.
